Review:

In this striking collaboration between artists Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston, words from lullabies and classics of children’s literature (and images of weathered tomes) serve as material for an inspired visualization of literary make-believe. The mixed-media, typographical illustrations invite lengthy perusal; the simple, evocative text is infused with a sense of adventure and discovery. It is given voice by a young narrator, a “child of books” who sails across an ocean of words to find a friend (a stand-in for readers) to be her companion on a journey of the imagination-into outer space, on “clouds of song,” through spooky caves, castles, and “forests of fairy tales”-a journey that need never end as long as there are books. A creative masterpiece, not only for children, but for adults who remember the bliss of traveling far and wide through the pages of their childhood.
