Directed award-winning news, feature and opinion coverage of education, politics, local government, health, religion and the arts for the newspaper’s most competitive news market, Orange County. Led a staff of 45 reporters, editors and support personnel. Met with business and community leaders, including officials for local school districts, universities, the Irvine Co. and others.
Assigned, edited and wrote reviews of the most influential new books for the nation’s second-largest book review, working with writers as varied as Newsweek managing editor Jon Meacham, the late David Halberstam, science writers Timothy Ferris and Simon Singh, historian David J. Garrow, as well as journalists Christopher Hitchens and Amy Wilentz.
Managed, wrote for and edited the newspaper’s books web page and blog.
September 1995 - May 1998 – The Denver Post
Responsible for the coverage of state and national government, politics, the environment, education and social trends for the largest newspaper in the Rocky Mountain West. Ran coverage of the 1996 presidential race, both political conventions and the G-8 conference in Denver. Directed projects on immigration, transportation and the state as a major world exporter of missionary activity.
August 1993 - September 1995 -- Freelance writer/teacher
Explored Colorado’s real estate boom-bust cycle, the tensions between ranchers and environmentalists over water, grazing and endangered species, as well as then Gov. Roy Romer’s efforts to mediate them for a variety of publications. Covered then First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton’s efforts to promote her health plan to state officials, the intense drought plaguing the West and the inferno that killed five highly skilled firefighters in western Colorado.

January 1979 - June 1993 – The Los Angeles Times
Award-winning writer and editor with deep experience covering education, local government, politics, transportation, environment, development and major movers and shakers in Los Angeles and Orange counties. Wrote profiles on CSUF President Milton A. Gordon, UC Irvine chancellors and congressional officials, as well as how to teach math to young girls. Mentored beginning reporters and interns.
